Heading north from Lisbon on this day trip into a bygone era, your first stop is Obidos. This fortified village of whitewashed houses and narrow streets has a distinctly medieval atmosphere and is a great place to relax and watch the world go by. At Alcobaca you will visit the famous Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also the biggest Gothic style church in Portugal. Lunch is taken at Nazare, renowned as being one of Portugal's most colorful and traditional fishing villages. At S?tio it is possible to enjoy a beautiful view over the beach and Atlantic Ocean. In the afternoon you will visit the wonderful Batalha Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece in Gothic style with beautiful stained-glass windows. Finally, you will arrive at the world-famous pilgrimage site of Fatima, where 'Our Lady' appeared in 1917. You will have free time in Fatima to visit the Shrine. Just outside Fatima in Ajulstrel, you'll see the houses of the three shepherd children - Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta - to whom the vision of 'Our Lady' appeared. The return journey to Lisbon is made via a rich agricultural region so you can relax and enjoy the views at the end of a memorable day.

Immerse yourself in the beauty of the mountainous region of Sintra on this day trip from Lisbon. You'll take a drive along the picturesque Estoril Coast, see the fishing port of Cascais Bay and watch the wild waves breaking at Boca do Inferno. The excursion takes you on a scenic drive along the coast of picturesque Estoril, where Ian Fleming (author of the James Bond series) hit on the idea for Casino Royale. Often referred to as the Portuguese Riviera, it is here you will find Europe's biggest casino. You will also see the colorful Bay of Cascais and the picturesque cliff of Boca do Inferno, Guincho. Next stop is Colares, famous for the region's wine. From April to October on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, the trip down from Colares is made by tramcar. At all other times the trip is by bus. | Take an afternoon tour to Fatima, one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the Catholic World. You'll visit the sites where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, and learn more about this incredibly spiritual place. The tour includes a visit to the Sanctuary Basilica, a place of worship for more than four million pilgrims each year. It is here you will find the tombstones of Jacinta and Francisco, two of the shepherd children who claimed to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary in 1917.
The main focus of the Basilica is the Chapel of Apparitions, which marks the exact spot where the Virgin Mary appeared. Many devotees kneel at this spot and pray, light candles or make offerings such as flowers. There will also be an opportunity for you to attend mass if you wish.
Your tour continues to Aljustrel, where the three shepherd children Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia, were born. Continue to Valinhos where Our Lady of Fatima appeared for the fourth time on August 19, 1917.
Your final stop is Loca do Anjo, where you can visit the place where the children were visited by the Virgin Mary on two occasions. |
