Bali, also
called "Morning of the World", is one of the most
popular destinations in Indonesia, as a location full of mystery and magic stories.
This is known as the island of 1,000 temples and is considered to be the land
of the Lord. The island lies in the extreme eastern part of Java Island and is
made up of coral reefs and beautiful landscapes. Ubud,
is the cultural and artistic center of Bali, with art galleries and handicraft
shops and the southern part is where the white beaches stretch enclosed by palm
trees and lush vegetation. The islands are very picturesquely, their land fill
of large areas of rice crops, volcanoes that extend to the clouds, tropical forests
with lush vegetation and white beaches bathed into the Indian Ocean. Lifestyle

between good and evil. For people of Bali, dance is the main offering to God
and gods. The dances are accompanied by gamelan orchestra. In the Temple ceremonies
to greet the gods, a group of dancers surround the main altar three times carrying
ceremonial objects like holly water, fire and materials of different colors.
Bali's capital and
also the largest city is Denpasar,
with a population of 300,000 people. The main street for shopping tours and restaurants
is Jalan Gajah Mada. It's recommended a tour in the morning in order to take
the pulse of this city with its specific smells, colors and dense crowds.

The urban atmosphere of Denpasar, Bali's bustling capital city and business
and administrative hub, contrasts sharply with the serene Hindu temples, green
terraced rice fields and superb sandy beaches nearby. Denpasar is a cosmopolitan,
modern city that has grown rapidly in the three decades and in many ways it has
more in common with other Indonesian regional capitals than with its island hinterland.
Nevertheless, it is worth a visit, even if you prefer to stay in one of the resort
areas nearby rather than in the city itself.
Located on the south coast of Bali, Denpasar is the regional capital and the
main gateway to Indonesia's most popular holiday island. The city is
a main business and administrative centre, and is home to a mixed population
of Balinese, Javanese and other immigrants from elsewhere in the archipelago.
Most visitors head for the neighbouring resort areas of Kuta, Sanur and Nusa
Dua; where most of the island's hotels, restaurants, shopping facilities
and nightlife are located. Jalan Gajah Mada is the city's main thoroughfare,
running east to west, and is usually jam-packed with traffic. Medan Puputan
(Puputan Square) is the hub of downtown Denpasar, with lawns and greenery,
and is dominated by the elaborate Governor's Residence, the Bali Museum,
and a monument dedicated to the royalty of Bali who were gunned down by Dutch
rifles here in 1906. Kuta, Bali's first and largest resort, lies a few
kilometres southwest of the capital, and has spread from its original core
for almost 20 kilometres along the coast, merging with neighbouring Legian.
It has a number of upscale hotels, but is mainly popular with budget and mid-range
travellers. Its main attraction is its superb beach, which is famed for its
surf, but Kuta also has a huge choice of restaurants, bars, colourful shops,
nightlife and places to stay. Sanur, east of Denpasar on the south coast, is
a more recent development and is less raucous and a little more up-market than
Kuta. It has fewer late-night bars and budget guesthouses and more mid-range
resort hotels, but like Kuta it has superb beaches. The Nusa Dua peninsula,
which dangles from the south coast, is the epicentre of a planned resort area,
with a selection of large, self-contained luxury resort hotels. North of Denpasar
(less than an hour's drive from the airport) amid green valleys and rice
fields, the hill resort of Ubud has excellent shopping, some of the world's
finest boutique hotels, and a slightly cooler climate than the capital and
its satellite resorts. Cruise ships, excursion boats and some inter-island
ferries leave from Tanjung Benoa, south of Denpasar on the Nusa Dua isthmus.
Bali Museum The museum is one of the best in Indonesia and has
a superb collection of the ornate carvings, painted masks, puppets, pottery and
textiles for which Balinese artists are famous, and is set within a complex of
well-kept courtyards.
Puri Pemecutan Temple Museum Next to the Pemecutan Palace
Museum, this 100-year-old temple contains a collection of valuable ancient
keris daggers and other weapons, musical instruments and Hindu statuary.
Taman Werdi Budaya (art Center) This complex of ornate wooden
buildings in traditional style contains contemporary Balinese artworks - wooden
masks, carvings and paintings - and also has a number of souvenir stores where
the work of local artisans are sold at fixed prices.
Conservatory Of Music And Dance (smki) Bali is famed for
its rich and several centuries old musical heritage and SMKI is dedicated to
keeping these traditions alive in the 21st century. Visit SMKI in the morning
(from 08.00-11.00) to watch dance teachers pass on their skills to a new generation
of students. Address: Batubulan
Traditional Music And Dance No visitor should miss Bali’s
many traditional joged and legong dances, barong performances, or excerpts
from the great Hindu dance-drama, the Ramayana.
Bali Restaurants
Denpasar has its share of functional warungs (basic Indonesian eating places).
For the best of Balinese and international cuisine, however, take a taxi to
Seminyak or Kuta. Some of the best western, Asian and international food is
to be found in the restaurants of the major resort hotels, which offer a wide
choice of alternatives.
Bali Bars & Nightlife The most exciting nightlife in Bali - from throbbing
dance clubs to hot karaoke bars and cool jazz cafés is in Kuta.
Bali Stores and shopping streets
The epicentre of shopping in Denpasar is the huge, riverside Pasar Badung. It’s
a sweaty, multi-storey concrete complex of stores and stalls selling everything
from fresh fish, fruit and vegetables to Balinese and Javanese crafts and textiles.
On the opposite bank of the river, the Kumbasari Complex houses many small traders
peddling cheap batik clothing, jewellery, silverware and dubious ‘antiques’.
For international-style retailing, Denpasar also has numerous modern, air-conditioned
malls such as New Dewata Ayu and Matahari (opposite each other on Jalan Dewi
Sartika). Out of town, Sanggraha Kriya Handicrafts in the eastern suburb of Topathi
(8 km from the city centre) has a huge assortment of all Bali’s craft products.
Prices are fixed. However, most of the best out of the ordinary shopping in Bali
is not in Denpasar but in the nearby beach resorts of Kuta and Sanur, or in the
hill resort of Ubud - all within less than an hour’s drive from the city.
Kuta is great for cheap beachwear and funky jewellery. Go to Ubud for the best
of traditional and contemporary Balinese wood carvings - and be prepared to haggle
fiercely to get the best price.
